Sprint is going to cut costs, possibly more jobs, but is not going to panic, Dan Hesse said Wednesday.
Speaking at Citi’s Annual Global Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference in Phoenix, Sprint CEO Hesse said the company closed nearly a dozen call centers in 2008 and could close far more this year.
“We could close potentially as many as 20 in 2009,” Hesse said.
Sprint has been improving the service it provides to customers, which has been reducing the number of calls coming in from customers with questions or complaints. Clerks are improving their efficiency, solving problems more frequently on the first call, which also reduces the number of call centers needed, he said.
He also mentioned other potential “headcount” cuts, but did not offer any specifics.
“What 2008 shows is you can improve your performance, your operating performance, by getting very disciplined around care and cut costs,” Hesse said.
It was about a year ago when Hesse started talking about “nukes,” referring to potentially aggressive actions the nation’s third-largest wireless company might take to counter top rivals such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Many industry observers considered Sprint to have its back against the wall and raised the prospects of a price war.
Hesse said Wednesday that he definitely wants a turnaround, but he does not want to “pull the price lever,” substantially boost phone subsidies or lower the credit quality of the customers it signs.
“The key for us is not to panic,” Hesse said. “We are making progress. It does take time. We do not want to do unnatural things to stimulate gross adds if it doesn’t make sense from a profitability perspective. That’s why it’s going to take some time. It’s not going to happen overnight.”
