Best Buy: Instinct the best selling handset in two years

The Samsung Instinct is the best selling wireless handset sold by Best Buy in the last two years, the retailer said today.

The phone "produced record sales in its first two weeks," Best Buy said in a release.

As part of its Instinct promotion, Best Buy has been setting up the phone for buyers, even personalizing some phone features and e-mail. Best Buy said it will extend the "Walk Out Working" program through August.

The Instinct is indicative of a sea change in consumer buying habits, said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy's mobile division. Sales of higher-end multimedia phones have increased by 1,000 percent since Best Buy set up special areas in the store for wireless phone consumers, he said.

"Increasingly, our customers are gravitating toward feature-rich handsets that let them do more with their mobile device, including e-mail, web browsing, and GPS navigation,” Score said in a release. "Phones such as the Samsung Instinct from Sprint have helped Best Buy deliver the latest and greatest in technology to our customers."

Sprint executives have said the Instinct. which went on sale June 20, is their fastest selling handset ever.

"We have a winner in Instinct," John Garcia, president of Sprint's wireless devision, said in the release.
