I left Sprint a couple of years ago, fortunately for me, voluntarily. I did find that pay scales in general were much lower than what I was used to, and I did face negative bias toward being formerly with Sprint on more than one job interview. Right or wrong, the perception is out there, so be prepared to prove it wrong.

This issue is pretty much local to the OP KC office. In my local area "Sprint" was the lowest paying employer for a cell company. We'd hire someone, get them trained and then off they went to the other carriers.

Here is what I think should be done. Not one person in the OP office should make more then 100K per year unless you are actually worth it. Secondly OP is cancer for this company and there should be a head count reduction in OP that is between 20% and 30%, but no less then 20%.

Every time I have gone to OP I looked around and shake my head with shame. The OP office is way too nice considering the state of the company and the people I have to deal with are making much more money then I and I work twice as hard. I see a lot of people standing around, making copies and printing things out every five minutes. I was in a meeting and I emailed my presentation out to all the people in the room. In a matter of seconds the printer was in full production and everyone in that room printed out a copy in full color! I had to wait 40 min. to give my presentation because of this. This was three weeks ago. The silly thing about this is at my home office our color printer was removed and a small (home style) printer was installed, it severs 104 workers!

If Dan does not cut deep and start moving OP jobs out to the local markets or regions he will in fact be helping kill Sprint Nextel. It is clear to me that OP is a money pit and a black hole and we in our local markets can handle things better then OP. My presentation mentioned above was about my region and its markets. The overlords in OP wanted me to fill them in, in person. I told them I could do this via the web and did not need to be there in person plus we are in the money saving mode. These people in OP got mad at me and told me to get on the plane. So I did and I was not happy about it. While we have to cut back at my local office these overlords in OP are still to this day living high on the hog. It is time to cut the fat in OP and grow the staff in local markets.

Overpaid and under worked??? I had oral surgery. I took one day off to coincide with my normal two days off. The oral surgeon shaved my jaw shaved. A manager at Sprint called me the day after the operation and told me to come in anyway. When I explained that I could not she said, "Well do you have a doctor's note?" I said "I DON'T NEED A DOCTOR'S NOTE NOT TO COME IN ON MY DAYS OFF!!!"

The problem with Sprint is the same with corporations all over. The biggest BullSh*tters will talk their way into the high salaries. Those of us who work well over 40 hours a week, are under paid and over worked. So please get your stories straight, we are not all worhless and lazy.

My question is how would you know what your neighbors are doing all day long unless you are sitting on your arse NOT working that requisite 40 hours a week you mention? My guess is you are a disgruntled former Sprint employee who couldn't do their job and got laid off and now are sitting around looking for things to complain about. Get a job and pay attention to your own life!

You won't find the CEO of Verizon or AT&T on that list. And they are far more successful than Hesse who has yet to prove he has the skills.

He is making almost $30M to prove he has what it takes to be the CEO. That's a rather expensive trial given where Sprint is today.

I agree with Diane Stafford after too many years at Sprint. When you have a Director without any direct reports for over a year, and an Assistant VP with 4 direct reports (incl administrative assistant) for two years, one has to agree these fine folks are over-paid and under-worked. Did you know an executive package includes a monthly car allowance? That'd classify as "over-paid".

When the real competition came marching on, these over-paid executives and senior managers lacking in skills were capable of 1) Doing the samething only faster -- of course we know that will only generate same results, don't we? But, it sure justifies their day at the office, and makes them look productive. 2) Stick their heads in the sand until competition kicks'em in their lazy arse's. Oh, and this is happening as I type. 3) Kept busy playing the corporate politics to CYA and protect their turf. They need to justify why they need 10 for 5 people job. Yes, it's that pyramid scheme -- one makes a lot of money at the top while looking important. Obviously, their personal ego was far more important than what's good for the company.

The core of Sprint workforce consists of spouses, daughters/sons, aunts/uncles, fraternity/sorority buddies. No wonder it's a challenge for them to understand what "out-of-box" means. In their defense, these are fine work horses but have yet to figure out how to use their brain. Accountability will be a good start.

So I am new Sprint Employee and I am hearing all these rumors of being overpaid. I sure wish they were true. See after spending 5 years at a local Univeristy, that Sprint helps to Fund, cough cough UMKC cough, I have some college debt to pay off. I sure wish my salery went up 5% a semester like my tutuion did.

I didn't have the greatest GPA but, I had the will to work. I started as a so called over paid contracter. Yeah, it was nice, I made less with my engineering degree than the guy who drives a bull dozer, plus I had no benefits and no job security. Yeah really over paid there. Then after a few months of proving myself I was offered a job as a regular Sprint Employee with actual benefits. I jumped at the chance, even if it meant a pay cut.

So now here I sit working on the Network, sure I may go to the office at 9 or 10 some days, but that's becuase I was up at 2 am fixing issues so people can make calls and send texts. I am salary, and on call 24/7, that means while you are sitting at home with your kids, I might be working. That includes holidays. Oh, and if I work 60 hours a week I only get paid for 40.

So I am working and trying to take all the blanket comments in stride, but I ask you to remember one thing. Sprint has some issues, but that is the result of Wall Street and upper management, not the everyday Sprint worker who spends 60 hours a week in the office and is still asked to donate portions of thier pay to help March of Dimes, or Harvesters, or other local charties.

So honestly if you must attack Sprint, fine do so, but attack those responsible for our faults, upper management and Wall Street.

The Star seems to have adopted the Katie Horner / Gary Lezak / Brian Busby “sky is falling” approach with their Sprint coverage rather than a fair and balanced review of the situation. Commend new CEO Dan Hesse for a change, for being the face of our new ad campaign, and therefore sticking his reputation on the line. Commend the network folks who don’t march behind some moron in glasses in the hokey Verizon ad but still produce a network on which I haven’t dropped a call in over a year. Criticize the former CEO and his kick in the balls to our stock price. Criticize the ill-advised Pivot venture. But be fair.

Sprint has had a layoff every year for the last 6 years, especially in the overpaid "IT" dept. We have fewer people producing more value than ever before. I can smell hate here. Obviously you’re jealous of your neighbor; you need to get a life. Let me ask you one quick question, are you employed? If you answer in affirmative, definitely you’re not of any different from the so-called overpaid and under worked Sprint employees. I work for Sprint, and I’m proud of it. I can’t recall the last time I have enough time on my hands since I have been overpaid and under worked to stakeout or monitor my neighbor’s movements. My employment record reflects continual advancement across multiple job functions including; Customer Care, Technical Support, Product Development, and Business to Business Sales. An investigation into my performance would reveal a consistent pattern of exceeding objectives. My achievements include the Circle of Excellence Award, multiple President’s Council / Club Awards and a series of strong recommendations from customers, co-workers, and managers.

It is my opinion that Sprint Nextel’s Commission System and Sales Incentive Compensation Plan (s) along with but not limited to (Sprint Nextel’s) processes, procedures and policy constitute a deliberate and unfair pay practice which has and continues to set unreasonable expectations on commissioned sales employees; resulting in unpaid wages for commissionable sales that are deemed “valid” as interpreted by the plan (s) and potentially unpaid wages due to an incessant amount of time worked outside of regular business; which have yet to be calculated due to having been a salaried / commissioned employee.

Furthermore, in my interpretation, many of Sprint Nextel’s processes, procedures, and policies; since the time of the merger, have been vague and undeterminable, poorly communicated, disastrously executed, and unsupported, all of which has / is / will result in immeasurable damage to my personal reputation. Sales Professionals are more often than not judged according to numbers and quota; for this reason it would be fair to suggest that due to failing reporting systems and other “Business Practices” Sprint Nextel has contributed to an “unknown” and “incalculable” negative perception others have had, do have, or will have concerning my skills and qualifications; making it fair to also suggest there has likely been, or may be, a negative impact on promotions, merit increases (pay raise for performance), and long term career growth

Get your facts straight woman! We don't even get a cost of living increase this year and you say we are over paid?!?! Forsee walks away with $40M and we get nothing this year! Their HR department does studies of prevailing wages for professionals in their field to attract people. They don't look to pay low, and the other people in KC ought to think what their salary would be if there were one less employer paying well. It's all good.By the way, I wonder when Garmin will get sued for not hiring older people or women in IT? Cerner is similar. I know of lots of qualified people who do not even get an interview in technology  because they are not in their twenties or a white guy. It's systematic.

Is this a new initiative at Sprint (since putting this stupid Sprint Connection online) for all Sprint employees to go on here and defend Sprint's honor and talk about how bad the KC Star is...we all know (I am a former employee by choice), that Sprint is NOT a great place to work and people on top are overpaid.  People should just admit it, the people who work there walk around with their heads low so they aren't caught in the crossfire and get layed off.  Good job Hesse and getting KC Star to give you this blog space and you use it to bash the Star for every story (most true) they print about Sprint.  Sprint used to be a great company giving raises and bonuses, but now no raise and no bonus (did they realize they are overpaying their workers-makes you wonder doesn't it?).

That company wouldn’t know good recruiting practices if they came preset into there dam GPS devices.  Garmin wants mindless robots that work for pennies and won’t help grow the company.  Have you ever looked at there careers site?  List past jobs....salaries....WHO YOU KNOW WITHIN THE COMPANY....who recommends you.....? Sorry Garmin’s a case of "the good old boy" system.  As for Hallmark, lots work there just as lots of ex hallmarker’s work for Sprint. I hate to say this to you but please....if your going to lie, at least make it believable!

Given Sprint basically employs Kansas it's funny to hear what I am sure are local Sprint employees complaining about the article.  I mean if Sprint were to fold up and leave (which given their obvious fundamental problems at this point) where would anybody work?  The fact that people have been at Sprint for 15 & 20 years with only managerial responsibilites goes to show you there is no other "real" game in town.  Sprint employs way too many people to do to little work.

You have no idea what you're talking about. In addition, these "overpaid" workers are spending a lot of that money right here in KC. I plan to begin a campaign to have Sprint employees (and there are lots of us left) not only boycott your newspaper, but also contact your advertisers and let them know that we do not intend to buy any of their products they advertise in the Star until this nonsense stops.

I work in the industry on the East coast and I can tell you without a doubt that Sprint is one of the LOWEST paying telecom companies in the area...

Also, not everyone agrees that Sprint is a "sinking ship," they have had some struggles of late but in reality they are taking action to fix what is wrong and pushing the envelope with their new wimax venture... I would just LOVE to know who sprint pissed off from the KS Star because you guys seem to have nothing better to do than slander the company.

As a recruiter in the IT space in Kansas City we always ask area clients if there are companies they wouldn't hire from... the only company that ever comes up in response to that question is Sprint.

The perception is the duties are so segregated at Sprint that the associates don't have depth or a broad understanding and struggle beyond a limited scope of duties. And of course their salaries are inflated.

The pay inflation is a vicious cycle, in order to get the talent it wants Sprint has traditionally been very aggressive in pay for sought after skill sets in the area. Second Sprint uses Kelly for contractor services that until recently was under a mark-up arrangement. Mark-ups always result in pay inflation cause vendors have no vested interest in keeping pay scales in check, the more they pay contractors the more money the vendors make. Then when Sprint wants to convert these contractors they have to pay higher salaries to make it worth while for them to convert.

First off, I too think this is just another in a series of attacks on Sprint, its reputation, and that of its workers.

Sprint is in fact a fine company to work for, and a company that is very active in supporting the community such that it would be sorely missed, and the impact of its demise or its departure would be far greater than I suspect most have even contemplated.

That having been said, this is the working world, of course there are some overpaid employees in any company. In addition, there are some employees who are given too much freedom and choose to abuse the same. Those are the first employees to be let go.

For every one of those employees, there are at least two others who always work overtime, odd hours, whatever is necesary to do a fabulous job and they would definately be an asset to any business in town willing to hire them.

It is sad to think that maybe a few of the bad ones can be allowed to ruin the rep of so many talented, hard-working individuals just because a local rag would rather sell scandal and lies then to really verify its facts and simply print the truth.

Hey... green initiatives... I think the STAR could easily do this.

First of all, a genuine, heartfelt thank you to all of those that offered kind words of support for Sprint. I am a Sprint employee with 19 years of service. I love my customers and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to do what I do. I assure you that I am not underworked and underpaid. I know of no one that works only 40 hours per week. We care about our customers and we believe in our company. We now have in place an exceptional CEO and we are working hard to resolve our issues and become a better service provider.
I would encourage everyone in the Metro area to be supportive of Sprint and other hometown companies. One can only imagine what the economic impact would be to KC if we lost our hometown employers.

HMMMM....Just what is the measurement of proper pay for proper hours? Who determines this all mighty measurement? I am not sure anyone on this blog will be qualified to do so. Its all realtive - take a current KC salary to the east coast and one is no longer paid well AT ALL and can't live the same lifestyle as in the Midwest. Sprint figured out long ago, to keep talented Midwesterners in the Midwest while simultaneously attracting equally talented workers from the "big cities", salaries needed to be higher to compete.

It is sickening to see the amount of conjecture thrown around as fact simply because of hearsay. During this time of downsizing and flux, KC should be supporting its neighbors (clean car or not), friends and families who are adversly effected by these layoffs. No one truly knows how hard anyone works and the respective salary. I can only hope those reading this blog AND the star gain a sense of humanity when the economy of KC continues to degrade after the overpaid workers of the largest company in the metro are no longer paid at all.

While the media always has to air Sprint's dirty laundry which negatively impacts the company I'd like to read a comparison of what Sprint does for just KC (not to mention other towns) for the city with charities etc.

I want to see numbers! I'd be willing to bet while they kick us while we're down we still do more for this city than the Star ever thought about. Yet we're the bad guys.

How many of the people accusing Sprint employees of being underworked respond to emails at all hours of the night? Almost every Sprint employee that I know works at home in the evenings at least once or twice a week in addition to their 40+ hours spent in the office. Plus since most of them have Palm or Blackberry devices they send/receive emails all day AND night! Get your facts straight.
The KC Star is obviously supporting the anti-Sprint bandwagon and as a Sprint employee I'm dropping my KC Star subscription. I'm sure others will follow.

So to say Sprint has lost all it's top talent is just flat out false. I would argue the opposite in fact. I would have to question your mentality to say top talent left Sprint to work harder for less money.

The fact is most people are jealous. More and more Sprint workers work from home and people think that means they don't work.

What it does mean is we have talented people that do not need to have a baby sitter punching a time clock on their workers.

And Sprint does a magnificent job of encouraging a work\home-life balance.

KC Star is correct, if you have Sprint on your resume then you are "marked" in the KC metro. Go and see how many ex-Sprinters are working at Hallmark, Garmin or Cerner. All local staffing firms will tell you that local companies dont want ex-Sprinters. Right or wrong thats the way it is. The worker bees at Sprint for the most part are hard working, the 1st layer of management is the pits. Anyone one who has worked at Sprint over the past 10 years will tell you they have bled out most of their talent and cannot draw top talent anymore. Its been on a steady decline since they went through a contractor abatement in 2001. Sprint PCS was built mosty by out of state consultants. Not locals...Hence the decline.

I suspect that this 'blog' article is simply an attempt to 'drum up a response' from the largest workforce in the KC area- and, by extension- 'readership' of the KC Star. Why include a 'unfounded' comment/question from an un-named source? This appears to be an un-informed opinion; telecomm positions do typically pay more than other positions due to the high technological expertise expected AND- keep in mind that Sprint Nextel is directly serving over 50 million people. How many other companies in the KC area can claim the same situation? This is a capitalist society and people and companies are free to negotiate whatever they can for a salary, within the broader labor market (which Sprint Nextel must compete for talent in- i.e., compete with the Verizon's and Microsoft's of the world); if other KC companies can not compete with Sprint Nextel, salary-wise- who's fault is that?

In response to whether or not I am underpaid, I've spent some time in the last year determining my marketability in the Kansas City area, which involves a lot of career networking and job interviews.

I can say that in 15 interviews, I have had 7 offers of employment at a salary equal or greater to that of my current; only two were equal, but then I didn't ask for more because they were near equal roles.

The reason I have not left the company is simple - the other roles could not provide the flexibility of working from home, or being mobile when necessary. Myself and my spouse are still in school and need some room to breathe.

Do I feel overworked - yes? As an IT employee we all do; do I have some loyalty to the company? Yes, I believe in the products we have - our customer service has languished, but we have good products both consumer and business.

I don't want to hear of neighboors and other nosy Nancies discussing their slacker, neighboorhod Sprint employees because they likely don't know their story.

For know I know that I am certainly not overpaid, but certainly not underworked.

Oh, and I have already cancelled my KC STAR subscription - a very lousy paper indeed. Ms. Stafford needs to get her information straight; if you want to run a smear campaign, do it somewhere else. Please.

If you truly...TRULY believe the newspaper only prints the news, then raise your hand. No jackass should be sitting at his/her laptop with a hand in the air. Newspapers do not report news for the sake of reporting. A lot goes into what stories are published. Newspapers are a BUSINESS, not just an information source. They publish based on trends, fears, who is paying big bucks for advertising (more stories), etc. Maybe Sprint decreased their advertising dollars with The Star. I worked in this industry and these things DO HAPPEN. I don't think a newspaper should support business entities. However, they should have standards to not slam a business that has done a lot for our community, especially when there is nothing concrete to substantiate claims upon. This is sickening.

When the economy was good those same "headhunters" spent a good deal of their time trying to steal Sprint employees away for other jobs. Mostly because Sprint employees are a group of highly skilled, ethical, workers with excellent attitudes and work ethics.

I would like the Star to answer a couple of questions about those headhunters.
1) How many did you interview?
2) How often did they say that Sprint employees were UNDER qualified?
3) How often did they indicate that Sprint employees were hard to place based on their skill sets and work ethics?
4) How can those headhunters possibly know how underworked Sprint employees are?
and most of important of all:
IS IT POSSIBLE that SOME of those overpaid, underworked laid off Sprint employees being referenced by those headhunters were laid off specifically because they were goofing off while the rest of us were working ourselves to death.

Fosee was certainly overpaid. As far as underworked I couldn't say, but as it turns out Sprint would have been far better of if Forsee had just sat quietly at his desk and read the paper. His "work" resulted in the worst merger in history leading to the loss of jobs and the loss of billions of dollars by Sprint shareholders.

The only worse waste of money is Hockaday.

That is correct. I too canceled my Star subscription today over this. It's not because they're reporting what headhunters "all over town" are saying (off the record to the blogger.) I stopped my subscription because the headline was clearly a marketing ploy to get people to read the article. The marketing ploy worked. The KC Star lost me as a customer.

A paper shouldn't support any company. They should report the news, and their opinions about it. The headline took aim at their customers. It worked. I read the article and dropped the paper.
