Sprint Nextel leaders may or may not have told Steve Jobs "no thanks" about running the iPhone over Sprint's network.
AT&T did say, "yes" and millions of its subscribers – some who used to carry Sprint phones -- now are carrying the sleek Internet-browsing devices.
Regardless, it looks like Sprint and Apple may yet get the chance to work together. On WiMax.
The techno-industry sleuths at TG Daily have a new report stating that Apple wants to hire a senior wireless system engineer who would be responsible for designing and integrating the company's wireless products with new technologies such as WiMax.
If Apple started selling an iPod, or maybe even an iPhone, that could quickly download a full-length movie, we have but one question: how far would WiMax-powered iPhone-craving consumers stretch down the block outside the local Apple retail stores?
With the ultra-fast WiMax broadband connection you can bet the whining finally would go away about the frustrating experience of surfing the Internet on an iPhone connected to AT&T's slower-moving wireless data network. The "network can be painfully slow" is how one typical review characterized it.
The TG Daily report notes that Apple has emerged as a formidable wireless force when it comes to Wi-Fi technology. Some have likened WiMax to Wi-Fi on steroids. The TG Daily crew appears to believe that WiMax-powered Apple devices could be powerful forces indeed.
"The company may be especially interested in media delivery capabilities and if the "Mobile TV" requirement is any indication, we are looking towards iTunes movie rentals and purchases beamed over WiMax to Apple TV, computers, iPhone and other WiMax equipped devices," the publication stated.
