The Palm Pixi will make its debut this weekend as part of Sprint's smartphone line-up.
With little fanfare compared to the launch in June of big brother Pre, Palm is hoping to push for more market share in the smartphone category.
What are its chances? Fierce Wireless has gathered comments from analysts. They are decidedly mixed.

...to the extent the Clearwire's stock price affects Sprint's Balance Sheet. Sprint is way below water with Clearwire stock; however it is booked at a higher value calcualted at the time of the deal. This clearly misrepresents Sprints books. At least one other investor, Intel, has taken a write down on it's assets as a result of the deal. As the largest investor, it makes you wonder if sprint is intentionally misleading investors by not taking a write down.
Additionally, is the 1 Billion + invested considered an attempt to boost Clearwire stock price so that Sprint's Balance Sheet appears more stable? Is this the best use of money as it relates to core business activities? S&P surely doesn't thinks so. What do Sprint shareholders think? This whole arrangement raises some serious questions and makes Sprint vulnerable to another shareholder lawsuit.

The articles also states that Sprint has drastically reduced capital spending while investing more on Wimax. So much for keeping the eye on the ball and focusing on the core business. Hyde doesn't see the correlation so maybe this article will help educate him.

Hyde has been critical of the Troll for stating that Sprint is stupid for investing in Clearwire and not having control. But an article in today's WSJ states just that (ha ha Hyde, you're wrong AGAIN).
It states that the Clearwire deal is strucutured in a way that gives CLWR control so that Sprint does not have to report Clearwire failures on its financial statements.
It's little understood, but the board's Chairman and CEO are Clearwire people. Sprint has 6 out of 13 directors and the right to appoint an independent director. This person can be rejected by the majority of the board, with the tiebreaker going to the Chairman. So essentially, if T-Mobile wanted to resell Clearwire service (don't know why they would), and if all of the non-Sprint Board members were in agreement, there is nothing Sprint could do to prevent it, even thoough they own 56% of the company. Stupid arrangement? Of course, but we're talking about Sprint folks! I think Hyde owes Toll an apology.

Even Forsee had the common sense and courtesy not to layoff workers during the holidays. Although 4Q numbers are low so far, he could have at least waited until after the new year, or perhaps not throw the Billion dollars down the Clearwire drain. Merry Christmas everyone!
