Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry, and HTC Corp. took a larger share of the worldwide market for mobile phones in the third quarter with new models, research firm IDC said.

Shipments of so-called smart phones, which provide Internet access and the ability to download new programs, climbed 4.2 percent to 43.3 million in the third quarter from a year earlier.

Phones that use Google Inc.’s Android operating software, such as HTC’s Hero, helped the increase, IDC said.

RIM, which released new versions of its BlackBerry Tour and Curve, claimed 19 percent of the market for smart phones from 14.6 percent. HTC of Taiwan raised its share to 5.6 percent from 5.1 percent, IDC said in a statement today.

Nokia Oyj shipped the most smart phones in the quarter, 16.4 million, and had more than a third of the market, followed by RIM.

Apple Inc. phone shipments for the third quarter were the most ever after introducing the iPhone 3GS and making its phones available globally, IDC said. The company’s market share climbed to 17.1 percent from 16.6 percent.
