Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry smart phone, will release a “higher end” version of the Bold as it prepares to challenge Apple Inc.’s iPhone during the holiday shopping season.
The BlackBerry Bold 9700 will be available to carriers worldwide next month, co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie said in an interview. with Bloomberg News AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. said today in separate statements that they will sell the phone.
The slimmer BlackBerry Bold, with a faster browser, longer battery life and higher-resolution camera, may sell for more than the original phone, though final pricing and release dates will be decided by the carriers, he said. RIM is releasing enhanced versions of its phones, including the Storm 2 at Verizon Wireless, as it tries to keep pace with the rapid growth of Apple’s iPhone.

AT&T said the device will cost $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a service contract, matching the price listed on AT&T’s Web site for the iPhone 3GS. T-Mobile’s statement didn’t disclose its price.
